Did they really say THAT?

Archived LDS Quotes of the Day

I happen to find some of the things said by LDS Church leaders can be somewhat entertaining. If these quotes offend just remember it is what was said and published and approved by the Church. I am not making this stuff up!

Todays Quote is from: “Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 3 vols., edited by Bruce R. McConkie, 1:, p.143″

“IF EVOLUTION IS TRUE, THE CHURCH IS FALSE. If life began on the earth, as advocated by Darwin, Huxley, Haeckel (who has been caught openhanded perpetrating a fraud), and others of this school, whether by chance or by some designing hand, then the doctrines of the Church are false. Then there was no Garden of Eden, no Adam and Eve, and no fall. If there was no fall; if death did not come into the world as the scriptures declared that it did-and to be consistent, if you are an evolutionist, this view you must assume-then there was no need for a redemption, and Jesus Christ is not the Son of God, and he did not die for the transgression of Adam, nor for the sins of the world. Then there has been no resurrection from the dead! Consistently, logically, there is no other view, no alternative that can be taken.”

Todays quote is from: “Elder Spencer W. Kimball, Conference Report, October 1960, Afternoon Meeting, p.34″

he day of the Lamanites is nigh. For years they have been growing delightsome, and they are now becoming white and delightsome, as they were promised. In this picture of the twenty Lamanite missionaries, fifteen of the twenty were as light as AngIos; five were darker but equally delightsome. The children in the home placement program in Utah are often lighter than their brothers and sisters in the hogans on the reservation.
At one meeting a father and mother and their sixteen-year-old daughter were present, the little member girl-sixteen-sitting between the dark father and mother, and it was evident she was several shades lighter than her parents-on the same reservation, in the same hogan, subject to the same sun and wind and weather. There was the doctor in a Utah city who for two years had had an Indian boy in his home who stated that he was some shades lighter than the younger brother just coming into the program from the reservation. These young members of the Church are changing to whiteness and to delightsomeness. One white elder jokingly said that he and his companion were donating blood regularly to the hospital in the hope that the process might be accelerated.

(Discourses of Brigham Young, p.78).

Many of us have been taught the doctrine of total depravity-that man is not naturally inclined to do good. I am satisfied that he is more inclined to do right than to do wrong. There is a greater power within him to shun evil and perform good, than to do the opposite”

Todays Quote is from: Elder William H. Smart, Conference Report, April 1901, Overflow Meeting, p.53

My mind goes back when I contemplate this principle of obedience, to that which we learn in the Pearl of Great Price, when in the councils of heaven the foundations of the earth and the building thereof were taken into consideration. Two plans were laid before the councils and because of the bumble and obedient spirit that was shown in Jesus Christ, He was chosen to carry out that plan, which His Father approved, and Satan rebelled because the trust was given unto his more meek brother Jesus.

Lets do a few more just for kicks

John A. Widtsoe, Evidences and Reconciliations, p.209

The story of Lucifer is the most terrible example of such apostasy. Lucifer, son of the morning, through diligent search for truth and the use of it, had become one of the foremost in the assembly of those invited to undertake the experiences of earth. But, in that Great Council, his personal ambition and love of power overcame him. He pitted his own plan and will against the purposes of God. He strove to gain the birthright of his Elder Brother, Jesus the Christ.

Elder Joseph F. Merrill, Conference Report, April 1949, First Day-Morning Session, p.27

Now there is another personality of which I desire to speak, one that the world calls by a name, but in whose reality as a personal Being it does not believe and that person is Satan, the Devil. But according to our understanding and teaching. Satan is a person with a spirit body, in form like that of all other men. He is a spirit brother of ours and of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is our Elder Brother in the spirit world

Todays quote is by: Joseph Fielding Smith, Signs of the Times, p.155

“Moreover, Abraham records that he received by revelations the fact that Kolob is the “first creation, nearest to the celestial, or the residence of God,” and its time is the Lord’s time and by it he reckons. These ancient prophets knew not only of the revolutions of the earth and the planets, but they had superior knowledge of the fixed stars. Abraham and Methuselah were astronomers with knowledge revealed through higher powers than the telescope. They knew more about the heavenly bodies than all the astronomers of this age put together. These men were not ignorant, superstitious old fogies, with minds prejudiced by false notions and imaginations and traditions inherited from ancestors who came down from the monkey stage. The knowledge of God and the things of God were known in the beginning. Men were just as intelligent then as they are now. Michael, the prince, whom we know as Adam, the Progenitor of the human family, holds the keys of salvation under the direction of Jesus Christ. He was chosen to be at the head and a ruler over his posterity because of his worthiness and intelligence. He had a perfect language, both spoken and written, for it was given him by the voice and finger of God! The Nephites on this continent also had a clear understanding of the universe. Without question the great Mexican, or Mayan, calendar stone, is the development of the teachings of inspired leaders among the Nephites. The decline of knowledge both spiritual and temporal, including the false notions regarding the earth and the universe, came about through rebellion and rejection of the commandments of the Lord.”

*false notions? Like evolution and the age of the earth or Nephites not being the ancestors of mexican or mayans? *

Another JSF quote: Joseph Fielding Smith, Man, His Origin and Destiny, p.452 – 453

If there were any truth in this hypothesis, then we should find all forms of life in the multitudinous stages from the amoeba, or worm, through the “higher apes” to man. Not only would they be found in the fossils but occupying places on the face of the earth which would be teeming with them. It would be impossible not to find them in animate existence. We would then find these “higher apes,” just short of emerging into men, burying their dead, making fire, and possessing some of the simple knowledge which these theorists ascribe to “primitive man.” No such creatures can be found on the earth. Our friends frequently refer to the Fuegians of South America, the Botocudos of Brazil, the American Indian and other peoples including the South African, or Negro as having developed far enough to be in the “stone age.” Every member of the Church knows, or should know, that the Fuegians, the Botocudos and the American Indians (Lamanites) are descendants of a very superior race of people. A people who had the Gospel of Jesus Christ and who were enlightened by its principles so that they were intelligent enough to live together in peace and harmony, without “envyings, nor strifes, nor tumults, nor whoredoms, nor lyings, nor murders, nor any manner of laciviousness,” for nearly two hundred years. Then they ceased to serve the Lord and turned to wickedness. This resulted in a very short time in their spiritual light going out. From their exalted state they fell to the pitiable condition in which Mr. Darwin and others found them. Bible students know that the African is descended from an enlightened ancestry, men who were skilled in the arts, in mechanics and music. It was sin that brought them to the sad condition of degradation. The natives of the Congo, “who pounds his tomtom to scare away the god that he fears,” and the American Indian, “with the incantations, the totem poles, and the medicine man,” are not “primitive” in the sense in which Dr. Millikan pictures them. The original man was not a savage. He did not evolve out of lower forms of life. He was a son of God! This has been previously discussed. He and his children in the beginning were intelligent and worshipers of the living God, and were made acquainted with the mission of Jesus Christ, who was to come. They were not savages, they were not “primitive” except in the sense of being the earths first inhabitants. To confound the term “primitive” with savagery and ignorance, is a display of ignorance, and is not justified.

Todays quote: Discourse By President John Taylor October 6-7 1884; Delivered in the Tabernacle, Salt Lake City, Monday and Tuesday. (Semi-Annual Conference,) October 6 and 7, 1884. (Journal of Discourses, 26 vols., 25:, p.22) Talking about plural marriage or polygamy

We know how sensitive the Prophet Joseph was to introduce this principle. He knew the feeling that was against it. It had been taught from the days of heathen Rome down to the present time that a man should have but one wife, which has resulted in the prostitution of many of the fair daughters of Eve as mistresses.

Todays quote: Contributor, Contributor v4, Vol. IV. January 1883. No. 4.George A. Smith, Inconsistencies of Modern Christianity.

In conclusion, therefore, we find that the Roman Catholic church possesses no authority from God, Jesus Christ or St. Peter, but that it is a self-constituted, self-maintained and self-perpetuated power. That in the construction and decoration of its churches, the manner of its worship, the dress of its clergy, as well as in many of the principles of its faith, it assimilates very closely to the pagan worship and customs of the several nations that existed under Roman rule during and prior to the days of our Savior, and that its religion, as a whole, is but an intricate and mysterious compound of heathen superstition, coupled with a few sophistical limitations of Christian principles and observances. Viewed from every standpoint, it presents those bristling horns and ugly features of deformity that were to be the sure signs and form the true characteristics of that great “anti-Christ,” the “mother of harlots,” the “abomination of desolation,” that should make “all nations to drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornications,” and that should be reserved for the great day of burning, when Christ should come to take vengeance upon the wicked.

Today’s quote by: President Brigham Young

(Discourse By President Brigham Young, the Gospel-the One-Man Power )Journal of Discourses, 26 vols., 13:, p.268 – 269
Delivered in the Tabernacle, Salt Lake City, July 24, 1870.

I will tell you who the real fanatics are: they are they who adopt false principles and ideas as facts, and try to establish a superstructure upon a false foundation. They are the fanatics; and however ardent and zealous they may be, they may reason or argue on false premises till doomsday, and the result will be false. If our religion is of this character we want to know it; we would like to find a philosopher who can prove it to us. We are called ignorant; so we are: but what of it? Are not all ignorant? I rather think so. Who can tell us of the inhabitants of this little planet that shines of an evening, called the moon? When we view its face we may see what is termed “the man in the moon,” and what some philosophers declare are the shadows of mountains. But these sayings are very vague, and amount to nothing; and when you inquire about the inhabitants of that sphere you find that the most learned are as ignorant in regard to them as the most ignorant of their fellows. So it is with regard to the inhabitants of the sun. Do you think it is inhabited? I rather think it is. Do you think there is any life there? No question of it; it was not made in vain.

Today’s quote is by: Harold B. Lee, The Teachings of Harold B. Lee, edited by Clyde J. Williams, p.35

The Garden of Eden was located in the area of present-day Missouri. It is not difficult for me, as we travel from Adam-ondi-Ahman down to Independence and back and forth to Liberty and up to Kingston and to Far West, to think of this as the Garden of Eden. It is in truth today a beautiful and verdant place. It may not be known to you people, but to us it is the center place because it is here where the commencement of the inhabitation of human beings upon the earth began.

Today’s quote is by: Elder Spencer W. Kimball, Conference Report, April 1965, Afternoon Meeting, p.63

A woman would have no fears of being imposed upon nor of any dictatorial measures nor of any improper demands if the husband is self-sacrificing and worthy. Certainly no sane woman would hesitate to give submission to her own really righteous husband in everything. We are sometimes shocked to see the wife take over the leadership, naming the one to pray, the place to be, the things to do.

Yep, McConkie was a black and white guy. Statements like this have a certain logical force, but I think they set up a false dichotomy. It may be accurate to say that we can’t have both evolution and the fall, but we may not know everything about those two concepts yet. I’d just as soon leave the matter open to further light and truth. It may be that McConkie now wishes he had done the same.

Wasn’t this quote from JFS, doctrines of salvation, just edited by McConkie

  3. SkiUtah said

It’s obvious from JFS that evolution had no place in Mormon doctrine. He stated that if evolution is true, then the Church is false.

Does anybody know what is the current Church leaders say about evolution nowadays?

  4. coventryrm said

Apparently from my experince on the other blog, the only real official church statement was in 1909 or so. Now there is not an actual official stance, one of those things that we just can’t seem to really understand how the fall of adam, garden of eden being in missouri and evolution can all actually be true. I am told by the LDS once we die it will all make sense.

  5. mcquinn said

I think you’re right, about he first quote, but it sounds like McConkie. He certainly agreed with te sentiment. Church leaders now, while making no official statements on evolution, have clearly changed in their personal opinions on the matter (with some notable exceptions like Russell Nelson).

I suppose we will know more about everything after we die, eventually, but we can also know more now about a lot of important things. I’m not sure I care much about the actual location of Eden, but if you believe it was an actual physical place, Missouri is not any crazier than any other location. The fall makes sense to me, and evolution makes sense to me. How these things interrelate is completely unknown, of course, but that is not of critcal importance to me either.

I guess for me it goes back to the truth question and what Sagan had to say. It needs to be consistent with what we already know to be true.

The flood is dated we know how long ago it was to have happened. We also know that at that time the continents were pretty close to how they are now much had changed in 4000 years in that regard. So for the Garden of Eden to have been in Missouri for Noah to have built his Ark in this area of the world, then the flood would have had to been global.

That also doesn’t even take into the time line of Adam, regardless of how you have reconciled origins of man etc, isn’t there a pretty clear time line of when Adam was actually on the Earth? So by him being in North America you are saying that the first man that could think and express himself symbolically lived here, that is also inconsistent with what we already know to be true.

  7. MCQ said

Coventry, that comment is full of unfounded assumptions leading to unsubstantiated conclusions. I think the things that you assume we know to be true are mostly not “known” at all, and I think, based on his quote, Sagan would agree with me.

  8. coventryrm said

I think Sagan would 100% go along with the age of the Earth, Origin of man as do 99.8% of the scientist that actually practice in that field of science. You should read those two Sagan books that I mentioned he makes it pretty clear what he thinks about those things and how certain they are as facts andwhy.

” I am told by the LDS once we die it will all make sense.”

I have been told this many times when I asked my questions … I’d rather not give my wife or daughter to a Mormon ‘God in training’ or my life and money to a church who’s only answer is , it will all make sense when we die .

It makes sense not to be fooled or taken advantage in this life .Although this day and age in Mormonism its not too bad , I’m thinking more about the early Latter Day Saint women/teen girls who were held in spiritual blackmail/bullying over polygamy with supposed Priesthood bearing Royalty and future Gods.

Wolves in Sheeps clothing is what they were.

  10. SkiUtah said

Anytime you tell males that polygamy is required to attain the highest degree of heaven, the result will be predictable, old men marrying lots of young women.

My g-g-grandfather was a mormon polygamist. As he aged into his 40s and 50s, one thing stayed consistent, he kept marrying 15 year girls…
